Kenya Falls Out With Her East Africa Neighbors Over Graft

High  level corruption in Kenya has led to deteriorating relations with her EA neighbours. So bad is the situation that the three presidents of Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania have been shunning their counterpart Uhuru Kenyatta in their deliberations aimed at fostering the region’s development.

Kenya’s graft reputation came into sharp focus after President Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Yoweri Museveni (Uganda) and John Magufuli (Tanzania) joined resources to build a railway line running from Uganda’s capital Kampala to Kigali (Rwanda) and through the Tanzanian mainland to the port city of Tanga.

Earlier plans by Kenyan authorities to rope in Uganda and Rwanda as partners in the standard gauge railway (SGR) running through Kenya to the port city of Mombasa, flopped after the two neighbours accused the current Kenyan Jubilee administration of grossly inflating its costs.

Last week, Kagame launched a scathing attack on Kenya administration, accusing it of high level corruption and terming the SGR from Nairobi to Mombasa as “a big rip off and a scam.” They are now trying to excite Kenyans with the refurbished trains that were used in China on 1950s,running on Diesel engines, terrible,” Kagame was quoted.

Notably, neither Kagame nor Museveni has attended any of Kenya’s national holidays as guests of the State, unlike during the early years of the ruling administration when the duo were regular figures during such fetes. Magufuli is said to hold the Jubilee duo of Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto in contempt as a result of their failure to fight corruption.
